The Position of the Farmer, Pre and Post Depression

Farming before the revolution of city life was commonplace. They were and still in many cases are, a symbol of old living, tradition, and most importantly, a sedentary mindset. The farmer was not one to seek new innovations in the world, nor were they the ones to accept new concepts and happily integrate them into the day today. Up until the 1900's, this mindset was never challenged, as most were farmers. Eventually, however, the city life began to prosper. With new communication systems, the creation of the car, television, and radio, the farmer's idolized stance in America lessened, both socially AND economically. This created a shift in mindset for farmers

Imagine living your entire life as a farmer. You have your crops, family, and religion, and nothing else. Why would you need anything else? you're a farmer, you live a simple life, on a simple farm, while shall be given to your child when they reach the age, to lead the same life. Eventually, you begin to hear talk from the cities. Talking about crazy new technologies, the radio, cars, television. You don't like it, of course, you wouldn't, its change. You, as the old farmer, can live without the temptations of the cities, but your children are more easily baited. They may leave, and never come back.

The ideas of the city life during the 1920's was a terror to adult farmers and a beacon of hope to the young. They didn't have to live their parent's life, living in the dirt growing food. They could prosper with thousands, see the nightlife in its glittering display, how could they resist? the old farmers hated this, they followed their parents, so why shouldn't their children follow them?  So with the start of the 20's the farmer's position in the social systems of America changed from a person of stalwart structure to one clinging to the past.

It was during this time that the cities life and structure was beginning to economically kill farmers. Of course,e before the 20's farmers had already been suffering lowered prices for foods, but now farmers began protesting and demanding some assistance, assistance which, eventually came, but was not enough.

All good things come to an end, and eventually, the stock market crashed, and everyone was poor, no longer just the farmers. It was here that many people living the cities couldnt understand why farmers refused to give their food away. The farmer now could relish in their hated, since the end of their reputation, they had suffered without assistance from the government. And with everything now gone to hell, they still suffered the most during the depression, but they now received due justice.

Such as it is, Farmers changed drastically before and during the Depression, from a hardworking traditionalist to someone clinging to the old ways of life, to the evil retributionist, reveling in others pain.
