Adolf Hitler --> Things you didn't know

Adolf Hitler was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1939 as a joke by Brandt, a member of the Swedish Parliament, and a dedicated anti-fascist.
He invented the "blow up sex doll" because his soldiers were being infected with syphilis from French Prostitutes during the war time.
Hitler's first love was a Jewish girl. Lacking courage, he never spoke to her. However, he was 16 at the time and he wrote her several love letters and poems. It was also said that he may have even contemplated suicide due to the pain of unrequited love.
Hitler led the first Public Anti-smoking campaign in modern history. The Nazi anti-smoking campaign banned smoking on public transportation and raised the tobacco tax.
Hitler was a vegetarian and passed laws against animal cruelty. However, to replace the animals that were previously experimented on, he used the Jews. He prohibited hunting as well.
Hitler was saved from drowning by a priest, when he was four years old. Ironically, the hero priest grew up to regret the incident.
During the first world war, a British soldier spared the life of a wounded German soldier. It is known that the soldier had clear aim to kill at point blank, but decided to spare his life. Hitler later saw an article about this soldier, recognized his picture, and saved the clipping.
Hitler planned to collect Jewish artifacts in order to create a museum of an extinct race after the war. He ordered the collection of two hundred thousand items which were photographed and catalogued.
Hitler never once visited a concentration camp. He in fact made sure to keep a safe distance from the dirty work. No written order exists supporting the killings. He gave the most sensitive of commands in person exclusively.

  1. The title of this post certainly wasn't misleading - I really didn't know any of these things! This was really interesting to read! It's very strange to me that Hitler's first love was a Jew. It makes me wonder if this is somehow related to his hatred of the Jewish people. I also find it really interesting that the Nazis were against smoking and animal cruelty. Hitler was definitely one of the most evil people in all of human history, and this really doesn't seem to fit his persona.

  2. This article really brings to light that Hitler himself was also human, that even though he's known for his atrocities he ordered to be committed against people of Jewish descent (and rightfully so), he also contributed positively as a leader in Germany. It's interesting how he faced almost certain death a number of times throughout his life, yet he was spared due to the benevolence of others. I bet everyone who had saved his life in the past would've reconsidered their choices if they had known that he would go on to order the extermination of millions of people, people whose only "crimes" were being of a certain race. I think his personality seems a bit contradictory: he could spare animal lives, but not human lives? This post clearly highlights the complexity of his personality, and how he was more than just the man who committed mass genocide.

  3. I agree. Keren, thank you for a thought-provoking post! It's really interesting to find out these facts about him, myth or not. As Braden mentioned, I find it a little ridiculous that he didn't want to be around "dirty work", when really, he was the one who initiated this whole idea! Adding on, as Anya mentioned above, it's also very ridiculous to think that Hitler was such a hypocritical person despite how eminent he acted...

  4. It is strange that his first love was Jewish. Also, from studies on Hilter's ancestry, he could very well have Jewish and African lineage. If only testing for ancestry was around during his time. Oh, who would be the scapegoat if it was proven that Hitler had Jewish ancestry? http://www.history.com/news/study-suggests-adolf-hitler-had-jewish-and-african-ancestors
