Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart

If you were a kid like me who was obsessed with Amelia Earhart, you probably read this book at some point:

It basically talks about the friendship between the two and a fun story about them flying a plane together. It's based on a real event. Eleanor Roosevelt was applying for a student pilot license, and who better than one of the most famous female aviators to help her out? In 1933, the two of them took control of Eastern Air Transport Curtis Condor while flying from DC to Baltimore. Here's an actual photo of this trip from the Smithsonian:

Icons. According to one source, to mark the occasion, Amelia Earhart wore an evening gown on the plane. The same source also said, Eleanor Roosevelt never got her pilot's license. She quit pursuing flying lessons after Earhart disappeared. Eleanor once wrote a letter to Earhart, explaining how her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, did not give her permission to fly planes! I thought that was pretty interesting.

  1. Interesting post Brooke. I never knew that Amelia and Eleanor were friends. It is cool to see that two very influential women were actually quite close. Both these women were people who revolutionized male-dominated fields during their time, and the two together undoubtedly inspired many women to pursue their dreams.

  2. This was a super interesting post! Another interesting fact about Amelia Earhart and the Roosevelts was that the Roosevelt administration kept Earhart's disappearance under wraps. When Paul Mantz wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt to ask that she give him the official report of Earhart's last flight, the Coast Guard refused to release it to him.
