While many of us do not remember the 9/11 terrorist attacks, almost all of us know the story. To put it simply, there were 4 planes. The planes were hijacked by Islam extremists and 3 out of the 4 reached their intended target. The most devastating of targets was the attack on the World Trade Center on that fateful day on September 11, 2001. On this day, nearly 3000 people lost their lives.
Flight 93. The single flight that never reached its intended target crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. The sole reason the flight never made it was because of the passengers. Once the passengers realized that their plane was part of a far bigger plot against the United States, everyone took a vote and decided to storm of the cockpit. One of the passengers on the flight, Thomas Burnett Jr. called his wife one last time telling her: "I know we're all going to die. There's three of us who are going to do something about it. I love you, honey". Another, a flight attendant Sandy Bradshaw called her husband and her last words to him
were: "Everyone's running to first class. I've got to go. Bye". In response to the passengers' counterattack, the hijackers began to roll the aircraft and pitching the plane up and down in an attempt to prevent the passengers from actually entering the cockpit. However, in the end, the hijackers made the decision to crash the plane before reaching the intended target. Actually, when the White House understood the events that were unfolding, VP Cheney actually ordered the US military to shoot down Flight 93 before it reached Washington. Though, even if the
passengers hadn't fought back, it is doubtful that the military would have made it in time. Everyone on board Flight 93 died in the crash as a hero.
The attacks that occurred on 9/11 stunned the United States as well as the rest of the world. The event brought America together and unlike today, the country grieved together. Very different than the fragmented country we see today.

I really enjoyed how you expanded on an event that everyone already knows about. You described the story in which the passengers of flight 93 stopped the attack with really great detail. Something I didn't know was how the government had ordered to shoot the last plane down, despite there being American passengers still inside it.
ReplyDeleteI loved the personal aspect of this post! We know the politics of 9/11 and the subsequent war on terror, but not many personal stories. It sparked my interest, so I did some research of my own. Investment manager Bruce Salvog actually had a meeting in one of the twin towers that day, but was running late and was saved! This changed his priorities: despite not having enough money to retire, he quit his job because he realized how little time he had left. He managed and budgeted the remainder of his funds, and ultimately spent more time with his family. He was quoted, "If you’ve walked away from a near-death experience, it’s like an epiphany. The plan wasn’t for me to die but to do something else with my life."

It's interesting to read stories from 9/11, along with the conspiracies that always come with it. For example, the blackbox issues. Black Boxes are said to withstand any damage caused, even after a plane crash. However, the blackboxes were "too damaged" to retrieve information from. Even regarding Flight 93 that you mentioned, popular conspiracies claim that the plane was actually shot down by U.S. fighter jets due to the passengers inside "finding out about th[is] plot". A "no-planes" theory claims that there were no planes involved in the first place, after closely analyzing the speed and the timing of the fall of the twin towers and concluding that it is physically impossible. Additionally, there are many cover-up theories about the incidents, due to the lack of forensic investigations after the crashes. However, despite these countless allegations and theories, we can not forget about the many victims of this tragedy.
