More Important Figures in US History, Jacksonian Era-WWII

Here are some more important figures to know for the exam! I focused on some of the figures who are easily forgotten, but also on some of the more major figures. All are super important!

Andrew Jackson: Founder of modern Democratic party by ending the caucus system and abolishing property requirements to vote. He did terrible things by modern standards -- he sent thousands of Indians down the Trail of Tears, used force to respond to the nullification crisis, held slaves, and was a generally violent person.

John C. Calhoun: Jackson's adversary, but also his vice president. Transformed national opinion on slavery from a "necessary evil" to a "positive good". Supported states' rights.

Frederick Douglass: freed slave who was literate and a great orator. He spread abolitionism.

Dred Scott: victim of the infamous Dred Scott case, where he couldn't sue because he wasn't a citizen despite being in a free territory. Inspired abolitionism in the North.

William Lloyd Garrison: Creator of The Liberator, a newspaper that advocated "immediate and uncompensated" termination of slavery.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton: Feminist, most famous for her actions at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848.

Sojourner Truth: Abolitionist and feminist. One of her most famous and influential speeches was "Ain't I a Woman?". She was also the first black woman to win a case against a white man in court.

David Wilmot: Author of the Wilmot Proviso, which tried to ban slavery in the territory from the Mexican Cession.

Mark Twain: Author who created the nickname for the Industrial Age: "Gilded Age".

Carnegie (Gospel of Wealth, steel), Rockefeller (oil), Vanderbilt (railroads), Morgan (banks and trusts): all industrialists.

Ida B. Wells: Anti-lynching journalist.

Booker T. Washington: wanted to solve the racial issues by establishing a separate black society. In the meantime, let them advance economically within the system of Jim Crow. Influencer of Malcolm X.

W.E.B. Du Bois: wanted to integrate blacks. Founder of NAACP. Influencer of MLK.

William Jennings Bryan: evangelical Populist. Defender of the Bible in the Scopes Trials. Gave the "Cross of Gold" speech in an effort to endorse silver.

Upton Sinclair: Wrote The Jungle, which influenced Teddy Roosevelt into supporting workers in the meatpacking industry.

Alice Paul: helped bring about the 19th amendment, drafter of the future Equal Rights Amendment

Franklin D. Roosevelt: New Deal; Relief, Reform, Recovery. Was against the isolationist movement.
