Shay's Rebellion

Shay's rebellion took place in 1786 as a protest towards taxes instituted by local governments. More specifically, the poll tax that was instituted in Massachuttes. This took place during the Articles of Confederation, who did not have the power to levy taxes, so left it up to each individual colony to come up with funds for the war debt.

Shay's rebellion was made up of farmers who were in debt. Since they couldn't pay the high taxes, many courts forclosed their land, taking them out of the job. In protest, Daniel Shay led a revolt to capture the federal arsenal, as well as express anger towards merchants and lawyers. Alas, their rebellion was crushed, and began to prompt the revision of the Articles of Confederation.

  1. Thanks for doing this post it was right to the point! It was a good reminder of what the Shay's Rebellion actually was. Especially because farmers are/where the main food source for all which means when they go under due too land closure's because of debt then we are all at the potential to eventually starve. You didn't really seem to go much into depth on the Articles of Confederation! So here's a little bit more... The Articles of Confederation was the first written constitution of the United States. Stemming from wartime urgency, its progress was slowed by fears of central authority and extensive land claims by states before was it was ratified on March 1, 1781.

    Good Job With the Post!!
